If you want to feel as though you're in Georgia having a meal with family, Fixins is the place to be in the Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento. I visited on the 2nd day of grand opening and many times since then. The service is always the same. It's wonderful. The ambiance is clean yet welcoming. The bar is great to watch a game. The mixed drinks : top notch. Here's the star of this location (they have a second location in LA): chicken and waffles . The waffles are crispy yet soft. The chicken is buttermilk chicken so tender and flavorful. And the butter is GRAPE JAM butter!! I've tried the full menu but this simple staple keeps me hooked. Don't pass this place up. Indoor or outdoor dining both have excellent service.

Can you say Finger licking good? It's called Fixins soul Kitchen for a reason. Kevin Johnson and his wife Michelle founded Fixins to combine her love of southern cooking and a black cultural experience at your table. It's nestled in the heart of Oak Park in Sacramento on 3rd Ave. There is street parking if you're lucky. If not, there's parking right behind 3rd street. Fixins is serving up Grandma's soul food style with something for everyone. When you walk in, you immediately see an open spacious bar area. There's also a huge dining area both inside and outside. They also have a private or additional dining space in the back of the restaurant. Our server's name was Maia. We had a party of 6. I started with Sweet Tea. My friends all had the Kool-Aide. Flavors are Red (Cherry), Purple (Grape) & Blue. $5 each, Served in a 24oz mason jar. The Smorgasbord menu order included...Fried Chicken Salad- mixed greens, tomatoes, cheese, onions, & ranch dressing. 3 piece dark chicken with Potato Salad & Macaroni and Cheese, a biscuit with grape butter. Oxtails with rice and brown gravy with Mac and cheese. Fried Catfish with Mac and Cheese, Collard Greens and Hush Puppies. Catfish bites with Candid Yams. Hot chicken sandwich coated with hot chicken sauce, honey mustard, lettuce, onion and kool-aid pickles on the side. Everything was delicious. Seasoned perfectly. Cooked to perfection. When you look around the room, everything is just taking story, going with the flow and enjoying the food along with the southern hospitality. Maia's interaction was funny, engaging and she connected with each one of us individually. She made the meal great as well. This was an excellent experience. The portion sizes are huge. You'll definitely want to take the extra's home. If you get a chance to visit Sacramento, add this foodie stop to your collection list.

I couldn't have family visiting from out of town & not being them to Fixins. It's a must! It gets busy even on weekdays so reservations are always recommended or you will have to wait. Once seated, staff are nice, food comes out hot & fresh, & Auntie Pearl might stop by to say Hi to check in. 10/10 - Fried Chicken & Waffle: oommmgg you can't go wrong with this & it's a must order every time I visit. Chicken was seasoned & fried perfectly; waffle wasn't too thick & everything pairs well with the strawberry butter. 10/10 - Fried Fish: yuummmyyy crunchy fish that was breaded & fried to perfection; they gave a good amount of fried fish along with delicious sides like mac & cheese, coleslaw, & hush puppies. 10/10 - Charred Okra: if you like okra these are for you! Char on the okra was just enough to not overpower the okra flavor & can't go wrong with bacon on it too. 10/10 - Candied Yams: these were dripping with all the yummy goodness of being candied; yams weren't too sweet & just enough spice to give it warmth. 10/10 - Pimento Cheese Dip: this was super gooey, cheesy, & pimento flavor really came through; it's was a nice change from a traditional cheese dip. 9/10 - Fried Green Tomatoes: coated nicely & fried well; tomatoes were cut a bit too thin, but the flavor was dynamite. 7/10 - Banana Pudding: it's tasted like a traditional banana pudding using boxed pudding which was a bit disappointing; nothing made this dessert different.

11am lunch reservation for six. Seated promptly, drinks ordered pretty promptly also. Good service in their lively, bustling dining room. Everyone enjoyed their food and cocktail choices and some had a bit to take home for a tasty snack later. Glad we got there at opening. There were plenty of folks waiting for tables as we left.

- large salad with sliced fried chicken thigh & cornbread croutons. LOVED everything about the salad except for the salad dressing. - the biscuits with the strawberry butter were phenomenal. - non--alcoholic drinks came in a HUGE mason jar. really appreciated not having to ask for multiple refills. they also have both Diet Coke & Coke Zero. - really nice ambiance outside on the patio, especially on a summer night. it's a little loud inside but would absolutely sit on the patio again.

I have been wanting to try their fried chicken in forever, and it did not disappoint. The meat is juicy and flavorful. Great portion. I love that there are a variety of sides (Fixins). It was hard to pick two for my sides. I got the fries, which was so crispy. I had to get the charred okra with bacon because hello..bacon! The freshly baked biscuit, which came with special butter, was incredibly savory. I was told to must try the catfish nugget. It was very good but the batter was a little much for me. Although, I think they need the thick batter, or the fish will fall apart. My friend had the shrimp salad, and the portion is very generous. I didn't order any cocktails, but the drink menu looks very good. The gal next to our table had the Spiked Pineapple Palmer, and it looks delicious. I have to try one of those the next time. In case you didn't know, Fixins is owned by former NBA All-Star and Mayor of Sacramento Kevin Johnson and his wife, Michelle. Don't forget to check out the wall with Johnson family photos. It's pretty cool.
